Psychotherapy

Luke believes in treating the whole person – spirit, mind, and body – who exists within an interconnected context. His orientation is transpersonal, somatic, and environmental. He takes a down-to-earth, solution-focused, client-oriented approach to this work (i.e., more “tools” than “schools”). Emphases: Integrative Meaning Therapy, Intercultural Control-Mastery Theory, Environment, Motivational Interviewing, Cognitive Behavioral Therapies (CBT), Twelve Step Facilitation (TSF) and Harm Reduction, Seeking Safety, transpersonal/somatic modalities; specializations in relational and sex therapy and in alcohol/drug abuse studies; further focus in mindfulness and spirituality, and integrative wellness. He welcomes paid positions doing counseling/psychotherapy as a systems and relational therapist who is licensed/registered in the USA (in California, Illinois, and Florida) and in the UK (British Association for Counseling and Psychotherapy).

Clinical Sexology

Luke is a sex-positive clinical sexologist. In the broadest sense, a sexologist is someone who has been trained and has learned in application in research, education, and consulting, who then studies and educates about sex. Well-established sexologists are usually recognized through some kind of certifying body. Luke, for example, is a member of the American Board of Sexology. However, the term sexologist is also used to describe someone who works in a private or group practice, as a sex therapist or a sexual health specialist. They are engaged in helping people resolve sexual issues and challenges. A clinical sexologist is a sexologist who offers sex-positive counseling, coaching, and education on sex, gender, sexuality, and sexual health, to assist people towards understanding and accepting themselves as sexual beings and to encourage them towards their sexual goals. More information in Luke’s Bio.

Substance Use Counseling

Luke believes in the “Stages of Change” model of addressing the misuse of psychomorphic (“mind-altering’) substances. That to which we refer as, “Substance Use Disorders,” involves problem use of mind-altering substances. These problems exist on a spectrum, and the overall methods which Luke uses to address them are Motivational Interviewing and Harm Reduction, along with more focused Cognitive-Behavioral Therapies and/or Twelve-Step Facilitation for those at the far end of the spectrum in need of abstinence-based treatment.

Humanism and Spirituality

Luke has been trained and is available as a ministerial facilitator for interfaith, spiritualist, and humanistic coaching, consulting, and performance of officiating, as necessary. More about this Humanism and/or Spirituality may be found in Luke’s Bio.

Social Justice Efforts

Luke has a long history of work for social and ecological justice, diversity, equity, and inclusion, and can bring this lens to any consulting work. He has always seen a direct connection between mental health, the health of the ecosystem, and the health of society. Luke operates within that context to apply his counseling to interconnected real world issues. He also welcomes offers of paid policy advising and coordination.
